A
Positive Spin is a very graceful maneuver when performed properly. This is the 7th maneuver in the BASIC Class sequence for 2004. In competition, there are required elements that the judges look for and if these are not present you can expect lower scores and even possibly a zero, zilch..nada... The first & foremost requirement is that the aircraft MUST stall. If it doesn’t, it’s an automatic zero.

Starting high, heading straight & level upwind and approaching the center of the box, cut throttle to idle & gradually increase up elevator to bring the plane to a stall. The aircraft should not climb with the introduction of more elevator but should increase the angle of attack & maintain the same projected level line of flight until it stalls.

As the airplane stalls, the nose will fall through the horizon, you should immediately apply full left rudder & some left aileron (still holding full up elevator), or right rudder & right aileron. This will initiate auto-rotation and allow the wing to drop in the direction of the spin. If you apply too much elevator before the aircraft actually stalls, it will snap into the spin, thus earning you an immediate zero for the maneuver. Remember, in IMAC, we fly with wind correction, so if the airplane "crabs" into the wind there will be no points deducted for that situation.

As you approach the second rotation, release all inputs to neutral, so that your plane will stop exactly on heading. You will have to experiment to see just when you should neutralize the inputs for your airplane as they all react differently and will need some lead time to stop just right on heading.

Push some down elevator to draw a short vertical downline (and to increase airspeed), then smoothly add power and pull out to straight and level horizontal flight. Remember, PRACTICE is the only way for you to develop your skills. SAFE FLYING & I’ll see you at the field!

The S.E. IMAC Judging Seminar will be held in Augusta Georgia on January 24 & 25 2004 at the Sheraton Augusta Hotel. Registration and payment is required by the latest January 14, 2004. Book your seats early as we have almost half of the available spaces already accounted for. Don't procrastinate & regret it afterwards.

This year (2003) in Georgia, we gained 6 new IMAC members. We do hope to increase that number again in 2004 with the help of our present members and also returning ones. I spoke with Chris Hinson (EXTREME FLIGHT) & Russell Reel who told me that they both were getting ready to return to active IMAC competition in 2004. We're looking forward to seeing you guys again on the flight line. Kevin Hamilton has already acquired his new "steed" for the competition season and Jay Richardson has now completed his new Yak 54 with a DA 100 up front. Jay tested it recently & is very happy how she handles the lines & angles.

Anyone having something for sale in the Georgia area & would like to have it displayed here, just let me know & I'll take care of it.

Announcing the 2nd IMAC Spring Fever Contest to be held at Mac Hodges' Field in Americus Georgia, on April 3 & 4 2004.
Dave Foster is the C.D. of the event & I will be assisting him. I'm sure there will be a great turn-out, & some good flying so plan on being there. Here is a link to the page.
