On Friday morning, October 17, 2003, Georgia's troops massed at the border of N. Carolina before making the trip into the heart of the State. We had very good representation in Sportsman with Kevin Hamilton & Craig Horrell watching the bow intently. Intermediate, with the wind in his sails, was held together by Joe Ryan. In Advanced, Nick Foster and Ron Storer manned the "guns" in the middle while in Unlimited Wayne Matthews steered the helm. The State Championships got off to a brisk start on Saturday morning at the pilots meeting with Wayne & Stan Stockman getting their first taste of being Judging Instructors. Intricacies of Judging Snaps & Spins were discussed so that all pilots were thinking alike. Roy Barrow brought to light the announcement which came out overnight on the IMAC website regarding the Zoneless box. As the first day wore on, it was evident that the "Georgia Boys" were going to make a significant dent into the final results. Three rounds of two sequences each were flown and as Saturday came to a close we were poised to sweep three of the classes that we were entered in. We retired late Saturday after acquiring our Unknowns & started the journey of studying & writing out for our callers. Sunday morning was crisp and with a spectacular sunshine it warmed up pretty quickly. Unknowns got underway & Georgia struck "First Blood" in Unlimited with Wayne winning 4 scored rounds & also the Unknown. Nick Foster also struck gold when he was able to hold on to his first place going into the Advanced Unknown. It was MOST unfortunate that Ron Storer lost an elevator servo in the first maneuver in his Unknown, as he was in a very good position to do great damage. In Sportsman, Kevin Hamilton was right at the doorstep with his new Composite ARF Extra 330 and was ready to step right in & take the win if Joel Marley faltered. However, it was not to be & Kevin took home the Silver back to Georgia. The S.E. Regional Championships is just around the corner & will be held at Triple Tree Aerodrome on October 31 to November 2. The 3 day event will culminate the 2003 competition season for our region. We hope to see you all there.
